Event Description:

The Black Hole Theatre Company Presents

The Rover

Written by Aphra Behn. Directed by Margaret Groome

“I don’t intend every he that likes me shall have me, but he that I like. . .”

The Black Hole Theatre Company’s March production of The Rover presents Winnipeg theatre-goers with a rare opportunity. First performed in 1677, The Rover is widely recognized as one of the most witty, bawdy, and exuberant of all Restoration comedies. Author Aphra Behn is known as the first woman to have made her living as a playwright. In The Rover, Behn simultaneously manages to observe the form of Restoration comedy, while being subtly subversive in empowering several women characters and exposing the cruelty of a time in which men continually attempt to exploit women.

The plot revolves around the adventures of two Spanish sisters, Hellena and Florinda. The two possess a degree of agency unusual for the time as they set out to enjoy themselves during Carnival celebrations in Naples. They encounter four exiled English cavaliers: Hellena flirts with Willmore, the womanizing rover of the title, and Florinda falls in love with Belvile, a colonel. Eventually the pairs marry, but not before misunderstandings, multiple disguises, interfering relatives, and several sword fights. Particularly striking is Behn’s treatment of Angellica, a courtesan. Behn gives dimension and substance to Angellica rather than treating her as a stock prostitute figure. Ultimately, Angellica is developed into a genuinely tragic character. This is sophisticated writing indeed; to create a tragic figure in the midst of high comedy.
