Canadian Society for Education Through Art (CSEA) conference
Start Date: 5/3/2018Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 5/3/2018
Event Description:

Winnipeg to host CSEA conference in 2018

Winnipeg will host the Canadian Society for Education Through Art (CSEA) conference from May 3-5, 2018. Up to 100 educators will come together to exchange ideas and learn about human rights in relation to visual art and visual art education.

This biennial conference draws art educators and others who are engaged and passionate for learning more about visual arts education from across Canada. This year’s theme, Taking Action, Human Rights in Art Education, resonates with this year’s host city, said conference chair, Prof. Joanna Black.

“Winnipeg is noted for its advancement of human rights issues, for having a ‘hotbed of ideas’ about this topic, and for its Indigenous professional artists like Kent Monkman,” Black said. “For conference attendees, they will examine this very crucial topic in our contemporary Canadian society: we are hoping to disseminate, share and explore current knowledge about Indigenous culture and Indigenous visual arts at this conference.”

Keynote speakers include OCAD instructor Dr. Pam Patterson, an expert on human rights and disabilities in visual art education, U of M Assistant Prof. Niigaan Sinclair, and Winnipeg performance artist, Shawna Demspey. The conference will be held at locations throughout the city, including: the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Plug-In Institute of Contemporary Art, and the Canadian Centre for Human Rights.
