Event Description:

EXPLORING THE OPTIMAL EDUCATIONAL ENVIRONMENT
FOR LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT:
A LOOK AT THE SURGICAL CONTEXT

J.O.O. Busari
Associate Professor
Educational Research and Development Department, Faculty of Health
Medicine and Life Sciences
Maastricht University, The Netherlands

As leaders, physicians are expected to demonstrate specific competencies that would
help them navigate the complex landscape of healthcare delivery successfully. Leadership
training is crucial for this process, as it prepares them with the needed abilities to provide high
quality services to patients and collaborate effectively within health care teams, both during
and after their training. The CanMEDS 2015 Leader Role re-emphasizes the physician’s
responsibility to be leaders and during this presentation, we shall examine how the learning
environment contributes to leadership development. We shall also engage in conversations that would trigger reflections
on individual leadership roles, leadership opportunities and prioritization of personal goals.

Learning Objectives:

•Describe the essential characteristics of “high impact leadership” in healthcare.
•Discuss the tenets of high impact leadership for the aspiring physician leader
•Explore the optimal learning environment for leadership development
