Event Description:

What’s different about working under Self and Family Managed care in Manitoba?

Christine Kelly,  CHS

Directly-funded (DF) home care provides funds to individuals to arrange assistance with the activities of daily living. DF is a rapidly expanding policy mechanism in Canada and elsewhere; however very little is known about the workers employed through these programs. Drawing on intersectionality and health equity frameworks, this presentation shares findings from a qualitative case study of the Manitoba Self and Family Managed Care program. Through exploring the lived experiences of DF workers, we demonstrate a growing need to understand how DF home care workers' roles differ from those of workers in conventional home care programs.

OBJECTIVES
- To understand the growing role of directly-funded home care in Canada

- To consider how working under directly-funded home care may be different from other home care settings

- To consider the health equity implications of expanding access to directly-funded home care
